Study Buddy

Draft, have a lawyer review before launch. This is a starting template, not legal advice.

Privacy Policy

Last updated October 13, 2026

This policy explains what information Study Buddy collects, why, and the choices you have. We collect only what we need to run the Service, and we don't sell your personal information.

What we collect

  • Account details: your name, email address, and a securely hashed password (we never store your actual password).
  • Your content: the files and text you upload, the study sets made from them, and your edits.
  • Study progress: your answers and progress in each set, saved on your device and, if you're signed in, on our servers so it follows you between devices.
  • Payments: handled by Stripe. We receive your plan and payment status, not your full card number.
  • Technical data: basic logs (like IP address, browser, and pages requested) used for security, rate limiting, and fixing problems. For abuse prevention we keep a one-way scrambled (hashed) form of the network you signed up from, not the address itself.
  • Messages: what you send us through the contact form.

How we use it

  • to run the Service: generate your study games, save your progress, and show your sets to the people you share with;
  • to keep accounts secure and prevent abuse;
  • to handle billing and answer support requests;
  • to understand usage in aggregate and improve the product.

AI processing

To make questions, the text and images from your uploads are sent to AI model providers through Vercel's AI Gateway. They process it only to return results to us. We don't use your uploads to train our own models.

Who we share it with

Service providers that help us run Study Buddy, under contracts that limit how they use your data: hosting and storage (Vercel), database (Neon), payments (Stripe), email delivery, and AI model providers. We may also disclose information if the law requires it. People you share a set with can see that set's questions, not your uploads or account details.

Cookies

We use two essential cookies: one keeps you signed in, and one random browser id helps us stop abuse of the free preview (one per person). The games save progress in your browser's local storage. We don't use advertising cookies.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and content until you delete them. When you delete a set or your account, we delete the related uploads and data from our active systems, and from backups as they cycle out. We keep billing records as long as the law requires.

Your choices and rights

  • Edit your name and password, or delete your account, from your account page.
  • Ask us for a copy of your data, or to correct or delete it, by contacting us. Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA) you may have additional rights.

Students and children

Study Buddy is meant for students 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect information from children under 13; if you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Security

Passwords are hashed, sign-in is protected against guessing, uploads are stored privately, and connections are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a unique password.

Changes

If we make significant changes we'll tell you by email or in the app before they take effect.
